Temperature transducers and transmitters are tools used in temperature measurement. However, they operate and function very differently. Transducers convert temperature measurement into a new electrical signal that is typically a raw signal corresponding to the measured temperature such as resistance or voltage. “Transducer” is a broad category of products that consists of RTDs, thermocouples, thermistors, and semiconductor sensors. A transmitter converts the raw sensor signal into a standardized control signal that can be transmitted long distances without significant loss or interference, usually in the form of a 4-20 mA current loop or 0-10V voltage signal. Transmitters offer features such as signal conditioning, amplification, and isolation.
