o start, you'll need version 9500-199D (versus A thru C). Version D supports a special Com Port Setting (Com99) that effectively disables communication to any com port. This is useful for laptop computers or thin client applications that are not connecting to a module but want to use the software for configuration/saving purposes or for software demonstration only.
Since the default com port setting is Com1, you'll need to use the following steps:
1. Open the Modbus Configuration Software
2. Select Settings. Then, highlight and type in Com99 in the Com Port box.
3. Select OK
4. Close out of the Software completely and then re-open. This will write Com99 to the Registry.
When the Software is re-opened it will prompt "No-module found on Com99". Select OK. Now you can select File, New, and choose any module to configure/save or to demo. The Com99 setting will not try polling any port including when you're in the test page or calibration pages.
If you then need to download a saved configuration to a module, you'll need to go thru the same procedure. Simply go back into settings, re-select or type an actual com port, hit ok, close software, and re-open for communicating with the hardware on an actual com port.
