This month’s theme is “Change is good” as we debut our new newsletter format. Let us know what you think. Keeping with the theme, our feature stories deal with adding an Ethernet interface to remote sensors or devices that aren’t currently linked to the control network.

Simple Ethernet I/O solutions to network complex sensor applications
Many customers have turned to Acromag for help interfacing special sensors to Ethernet-based controllers. The 958EN input module offers a simple and cost-effective solution for sensors with unique input types, (ie; high voltage/current, true rms, strain gage/load cell, or frequency/pulse), a mix of different input signals, or high isolation requirements. In these cases, we recommend using 8B signal conditioner modules with the 958EN Ethernet I/O module.
You can insert any mix of 8B modules on a backpanel to isolate, filter and amplify virtually any sensor input. The 958EN accepts up to 16 inputs through a DB25 serial connector to easily interface a panel of 8B, 7B, or 5B modules to a Modbus/TCP control network.
For even more demanding applications, we also offer the ruggedized EtherStax series that has a number of analog I/O models that support direct 8B inputs or outputs to provide more I/O flexibility.
Ethernet/IP combo I/O modules ideal for retrofit or adding PLC I/O
As control systems mature and become more distributed, it is inevitable that you’ll add more sensors and devices. But adding a few remote I/O channels later isn’t always easy or economical. For these instances, our Ethernet/IP modules offer several combination I/O models that let you mix inputs and outputs or analog and discrete channels on one module to save space and reduce costs.
The 951EN and 952EN units package four analog current or voltage inputs, two analog current outputs, and six discrete I/O channels within a 1 x 5 inch footprint. 983EN modules feature twelve bi-directional discrete input/output channels. These modules are Ethernet/IP conformance tested by the ODVA to ensure system interoperability. They also carry hazardous location approvals. Modbus TCP/IP versions are also available.
