New remote I/O modules pass EtherNet/IP™  and Modbus/TCP conformance tests.

Acromag's BusWorks® 900EN series Ethernet I/O modules  successfully passed Ethernet/IP and Modbus/TCP conformance tests. The EtherNet/IP test was performed by an ODVA™ authorized test service provider while the Modbus/TCP test was performed at the University of Michigan's test lab in accordance with a program administered by Modbus-IDA. The I/O modules demonstrated compliance with both internationally accepted specifications. Acromag is one of the first I/O vendors to receive an officical EtherNet/IP Declaration of Conformity from ODVA. The conformance tests assure users that the Acromag products use a common interface for interoperability in multi-vendor systems with other products that also comply with the specifications.

These I/O modules are ideal for applications that just need a simple, compact device to interface remote I/O signals to a PLC, DCS, or other controller. Each I/O module combines up to 12 channels with a built-in network interface on a single, independent device that starts at just $350–complete. No special software, buscouplers, I/O racks, power packs, or other accessories are required. This approach lets you start small and add capacity later without a major initial investment.  A variety of input modules are available to monitor thermocouple, RTD, voltage, current, or discrete level signals. Analog output models provide 4-20mA or 0-10V control signals while discrete output models control on/off or high/low switching.

Trade Show Review: ISA and WEFTEC 2004
This past October, Acromag exhibited at the ISA Expo in Houston, Texas and the WEFTEC show in New Orleans, Louisiana. At both shows, Acromag introduced their BusWorks® 900EN Series I/O modules with Ethernet/IP protocol. Each I/O module has a built-in network port, eliminating the need for an expensive buscoupler or controller unit. At the show, Acromag demonstrated the new 964EN analog input module, 983EN digital I/O module, 900EN Industrial Ethernet Switch, and an Acromag PS5R Power Supply interfacing with an Allen-Bradley CompactLogix PLC. Click here to view a picture of the demo.

Other new products debuted at the show. Our new 630T series 4-20mA Isolators enjoyed a lot of interest. Click here to view the application notes. These 4-wire devices are available in single-channel, dual-channel, and signal splitter versions. The recently introduced APM765 Panel Meter line also garnered a lot of attention. Click here to view the application notes. It has a bright digital display and can be ordered with optional 4-20mA output, relay controls, or a Modbus interface.

Ask the I/O Experts
Question: What are the pros and cons of Low-Side Switching (Sinking Outputs) versus High-Side Switching (Sourcing Outputs) (model 903MB versus 906MB)?

Answer: Quite simply, choosing between either low-side switching or high-side switching can based on a few things:
1. Your design requirements for your system.
2. Your wiring hookup preferences or requirements.
3. The load you are driving. Acromag's high side switching products drive 250mA/ch whereas the low-side products switch more (ie; 500mA per channel). The price is the same for either, so it's basically a matter of choice, preference, design requirements, and load driving capability.
