Ethernet I/O Modules now have the ability to speak directly to each other without a PLC, PC or any other controller in between for fast and easy remote I/O.

Acromag's new i2o™ technology allows input modules to write directly to output modules over any Ethernet media including existing IT infrastructure, a copper cable, fiber optic, or wireless networks.

Acromag has enhanced their BusWorks® 900EN Series Ethernet I/O Modules with a new capability allowing input modules to send measured signal data directly to output modules without a PLC, PC or other controller in between. This i2o™ (input-to-output) function is ideal for simple remote I/O applications where sensor signals at one location must be displayed, recorded or monitored across the plant or around the globe, but programming a controller is not desirable. Analog input modules measure current, voltage, or temperature signals at Point A and transmit the data to analog output modules that provide proportional 4-20mA or 0-10V DC output at Point B. Discrete input and output modules control local devices based on the level status of a remote device. Wiring costs are minimal because input and output modules can communicate between IP addresses across existing Ethernet network infrastructure, CAT5 cable, fiber optic lines, or via wireless radios. No software is required because the setup uses a standard Internet browser to configure an embedded web page. Even the hardware is economical - a pair of 12-channel I/O modules starts at just $750.

"SCADA users in power, water, and gas industries are very excited about eliminating monthly leased-line costs by using Ethernet i2o for remote I/O," stated Acromag Sales & Marketing Director Don Lupo.  more

Ask the I/O Experts

Question: We have 6 level transmitters with 4-20mA output signals that need to be displayed in a control room about 500 feet away. What is the best way to run these signals given that we only have Ethernet Cat5 copper or fiber optic cable available in the plant?

Answer: Acromag has a new feature specifically engineered for Ethernet networks called i2o. This feature allows input remote I/O modules to talk directly to output modules. In the typical network, there is a Master and many Slaves where the Slaves can not talk to each other, only to a Master. With i2o, no Master, no special software, and no drivers are required. The i2o feature can also act like an extended signal conditioner or a wire saver.

For this application, the Acromag 961EN-4006 with 6 current inputs can accept the 4-20mA signals. Connect this input module to the Ethernet cable near the level transmitters. Then connect an output module, 973EN-4006 with 6 current outputs each, to the existing Ethernet cable at the control room. The input module is configured via the built-in web pages to send a message to one or two IP Addresses per signal. Messages are sent periodically based upon a time you choose. The i2o feature allows you to transmit 6 signals over one cable and save on the cost of running wire instead of having to run 6 sets of shielded twisted pairs.
