Question: I require an I/O module that can run my application-specific logic routines and process data using custom algorithms. What would I need to program and download my code into Acromag's IP-1K110 FPGA Industry Pack Module?

Answer: To program the IP-1K110 or IP-1K125 module, you will need Acromag's Engineering Design Kit (IP-1K110-EDK or IP-1K125-EDK). The IP-1K110-EDK includes example VHDL code, and a "C" source program for downloading the Hex code to the FPGA on the IP-1K110 module. By downloading this example code to the IP-1K110 you can quickly confirm the IP's operation before starting the development of your own code. The example VHDL code provides important information for communicating over the IP bus and pin configuration of the FPGA. The IP-1K125-EDK provides all of the benefits of the IP-1K110-EDK but also includes a JTAG adapter board for downloading Hex code to the FPGA configuration memory (flash memory). To ensure easy integration with your operating system, we also recommend our OS software support packages for VxWorks, QNX, and Windows.

You will also need VHDL design software. There are a number of programming tools available for creation and simulation of your VHDL code. The most commonly used design tool used for this purpose is the MAX+PLUS II® software from Altera. This software includes a VHDL compiler, timing analysis and synthesis tools. Contact Altera for guidance on which package would be appropriate for your use.

The IP-1K110 and IP-1K125 modules use Altera's Model EP1K100 FPGA which is part of their ACEX family of FPGAs. More information on this component can be found at http://www.altera.com/literature/ds/acex.pdf

Note: The IP-1K110 is a replacement for the IP-1K100, the IP-1K100 remains available for existing customers.
