PMC modules combine digital I/O and counter/timer functions on a single card to cut costs and save slots
Acromag’s new multi-function PMC modules with digital I/O and counter/timers replace two I/O modules with one to preserve limited PMC slots on VMEbus and CompactPCI™ boards.

Acromag introduces two new multi-function I/O modules featuring both digital I/O and counter/timer functions on a single PMC module. The new PMC424 provides 40 digital I/O channels for TTL and differential signals plus four 16-bit counter/timers. The PMC464 has 64 TTL digital I/O and four counter/timers. Digital I/O channels are bidirectional for flexibility to meet almost any input/output configuration. Counter/timers can be used for counting events, generating waveform control signals, measuring waveforms, and other process monitoring operations. With more channels on a single card that plugs into PMC slots on VMEbus or CompactPCI™ CPU boards, computer developers can use a single board to perform several I/O functions which greatly reduces the cost of their systems. Standard models sell for $600 (PMC464) and $700 (PMC424) with extended temperature models (–40 to 85°C operation) available for an additional $150.

Both models provide four 16-bit counters with TTL-compatible thresholds. For more flexibility, two 16-bit counters can be combined to form one 32-bit counter. Six operating modes support pulse width modulation; watchdog timer; event counter; frequency, pulse width, or period measurement; and one-shot or repetitive one-shot functions. more

Feature Rep
Matrox Imaging was informed of the planned development of the PMC464 Module. This was a perfect match since they required high channel density, programmable debounce, and change of state functionality.

The PMC464 will be used along with the Matrox high-speed camera Link frame grabber PMC board. This integrated visual inspection system will be utilized for the processing inspection of finished tobacco products.

Our local Japanese distributor, Atryz Yodogawa Company Ltd. will provide support for future system requirements.

Ask the I/O Experts
Question: How does Acromag simplify development of custom I/O boards with user-programmable FPGAs?

Answer: Acromag's FPGA Industry Pack module (IP-1K100) is supported with an Engineering Design Kit (IP-1K100-EDK) and OS support packages for VxWorks, QNX, and Windows.

The Engineering Design Kit includes schematics for the boards, example VHDL code, and example software for downloading the Hex code (converted from VHDL code) to the FPGA on the IP-1K100 module. It does not contain the VHDL design software. The most commonly used design tool used for this purpose is the MAX+PLUS II BASELINE software, which is downloadable at no cost from Altera. This free software includes a VHDL compiler, timing analysis tools, and more. The LeonardoSpectrumTM -Altera® synthesis tool is also available for download. Another option is to purchase the full MAX+PLUS II software package. Contact Altera for guidance on which package would be appropriate for your use.

The IP-1K100 module uses Altera's model EP1K100 FPGA which is part of their ACEX family of FPGAs. More information on this component can be found at http://www.altera.com/literature/ds/acex.pdf.
