PCI and CompactPCI® I/O boards combine digital I/O and counter/timers on a card to cut costs and save slots.

Acromag’s new multi-function APC424/464 (for desktop PCI) and AcPC424/464 I/O (for CompactPCI) boards replace two I/O boards with one to save money and conserve card slots.

Acromag’s new multi-function I/O boards, the APC424/464 for desktop PCI and AcPC424/464 for CompactPCI, feature both digital I/O and counter/timer functions on a single card. The 424 models provide 40 digital I/O channels for TTL and differential signals plus four 16-bit counter/timers. The 464 models have 64 TTL digital I/O and four counter/timers. Digital I/O channels are bi-directional for flexibility to meet almost any input/output configuration. Counter/timers can be used for counting events, generating waveform control signals, measuring waveforms, and other process monitoring operations. With more functions on a single card, computer developers can use fewer boards to perform many I/O processing operations which greatly reduces the cost of their systems. Standard models sell for $600 (APC464 or AcPC464) and $700 (APC424 or AcPC424) with extended temperature models (–40 to 85°C operation) available for an additional $150.

Two models on each platform, PCI or CompactPCI, provide a variety of channel configurations. All models provide four 16-bit counters with TTL-compatible thresholds. For more flexibility, two 16-bit counters can be combined to form one 32-bit counter. Six operating modes support pulse width modulation; watchdog timer; event counter; frequency, pulse width, or period measurement; and one-shot or repetitive one-shot functions.

Application Spotlight
The Acromag newly released APC730 multi-function I/O and APC484 counter/timer boards are being utilized in improved CNC control systems with PCI based control systems that have replaced older ISA based systems. Quickmill has successfully integrated the Acromag PCI boards into their improved high-speed CNC contoller for controlling the hole depths and diameter of laser drills. The boards are operating under a Windows NT environment through the Acromag Active X OLE controls.

Quickmill Inc., headquartered in Peterborough, Ontario Canada, manufactures a complete line of large area CNC gantry milling and drilling machines. The Quickmill Gantry Machining Center provides a fixed table with moving bridge design. The table has no load restrictions and bridge widths that support 36' to 168' and with table lengths that range from 60" to 824." Quickmill milling and drilling machines are utilized worldwide. The internal CNC controls are PC based.

The industries served by Quickmill are: structural steel fabricators, pulp and paper, gauge and measurement, process vessel fabrication, hydro and utilities, and heavy equipment manufacturers.

Ask the I/O Experts
Question: I only have one PMC slot available, but I need to monitor some digitial I/O channels and perform counter/timer operations. Any suggestions?

Answer: Acromag's PMC424 and PMC464 boards both combine differential RS422 and/or TTL level digital I/O channels with 16/32-bit counter/timer channels on a single PMC card.
